In a significant development aimed at healing the internal rifts within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), governors elected under the party’s platform and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, are reportedly making concessions to restore unity ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

According to information obtained by Sunday PUNCH, Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, acted on behalf of PDP governors in a closed-door meeting with Wike held in Lagos last week. The meeting focused primarily on resolving the lingering political standoff in Rivers State involving Wike and the embattled Governor Siminalayi Fubara, who has faced suspension and political isolation in recent months.

The discussions also covered pressing issues such as the leadership structure in the South-South region, disputes over the office of the party’s National Secretary, and the broader need to balance internal power dynamics to avoid further fragmentation.

Since the 2023 general elections, the PDP has grappled with mounting internal discord, exacerbated by Wike’s fallout with key party leaders and his controversial role in Fubara’s administration. Analysts believe that the current reconciliation efforts signal a strategic shift as the party attempts to reposition itself as a viable opposition force in preparation for the next electoral cycle.

Party insiders describe the talks as “promising,” with both sides showing willingness to compromise in the interest of unity and electoral strength. Further meetings are expected in the coming weeks to formalize agreements and establish a clearer roadmap for internal reforms.
