The House of Representatives has called for an immediate investigation into the deadly farmers-herders clash in Lanzai and neighbouring Dosho communities in Darazo Local Government Area of Bauchi State, urging security agencies to identify, arrest and prosecute those responsible for the violence.
The call followed the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by Hon. Mansur Manu Soro, who represents Darazo/Ganjuwa Federal Constituency, during plenary on Wednesday.
Presenting the motion, Soro informed the House that a violent confrontation between farmers and herders erupted last Wednesday, leaving at least nine people dead, several others injured, and causing extensive destruction of property.
According to the lawmaker, the violence led to the burning of approximately 50 residential huts and the destruction of other means of livelihood in the affected communities.
“The House notes the sad occurrence last Wednesday of a violent clash between farmers and herders in Lanzai and nearby Dosho communities that resulted in the loss of nine human lives, injuries to residents, destruction of property and the burning of approximately 50 residential huts and other means of livelihood,” Soro stated.
The House expressed concern over the humanitarian consequences of the incident, noting that many families had been displaced, while women, children and the elderly were exposed to severe hardship.
Lawmakers observed that the clash had heightened tension in the affected communities and underscored the persistent challenge posed by farmers-herders conflicts across the country.
The House further noted that recurring violence between farming and pastoral communities continues to undermine national security, agricultural productivity and economic development.
As part of its resolutions, the House urged the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to deploy adequate investigative and intelligence resources to the affected communities to ensure that all perpetrators are identified and brought to justice.
It also called on the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS) to intensify intelligence gathering, threat assessment and early warning operations in the area to prevent further attacks and reprisals.
Recognising the humanitarian impact of the crisis, lawmakers appealed to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the North-East Development Commission (NEDC) to immediately provide relief materials, temporary shelters, food supplies, medical assistance and psychosocial support to affected victims.
The House also urged the Federal Government, through the NEDC, to facilitate the reconstruction of homes, community facilities and livelihoods destroyed during the violence.
To address the underlying causes of the recurring clashes, lawmakers called on the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security to accelerate the implementation of sustainable livestock management policies, ranching initiatives, grazing control measures and effective dispute-resolution frameworks.
The House subsequently mandated its Committees on Police Affairs, National Security and Intelligence, Emergency and Disaster Preparedness, and the North-East Development Commission to monitor compliance with the resolutions and report back within six weeks.
Farmers-herders conflicts remain one of Nigeria’s most persistent security challenges, particularly in rural communities where disputes over land use, grazing routes and access to water resources frequently escalate into violence. Security experts have repeatedly warned that the continued clashes pose a serious threat to food security, rural livelihoods and national stability.
