Better welfare boosts morale, strengthens commitment, enhances professionalism and reduces the temptation of corruption or compromise. A motivated military is better equipped psychologically and professionally to confront the country’s complex security challenges.
However, salary increases alone will not solve all the problems confronting the Armed Forces. Government must complement this initiative with improved operational equipment, better intelligence gathering, quality healthcare, decent accommodation, adequate insurance, continuous training and prompt support for the families of personnel who lose their lives in the line of duty.
As Nigeria continues to battle multiple security threats, sustained investment in the welfare and operational capacity of the Armed Forces should remain a national priority. President Tinubu’s decision is a positive step, and it is hoped that it marks the beginning of broader reforms aimed at building a more effective, better-equipped and highly motivated military capable of securing the nation.
