The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has criticised the proposed ₦100 billion stadium project in Bayelsa State, describing it as a misplaced priority amid the socio-economic challenges facing residents.

The party argued that while sports infrastructure is important, the state government should place greater emphasis on addressing pressing issues such as healthcare, education, road infrastructure, job creation, flood control, and poverty alleviation.

According to the PDP, Bayelsans deserve investments that directly improve their quality of life and stimulate economic growth before embarking on what it described as a capital-intensive stadium project.

The criticism comes as public debate continues over the proposed project, with supporters arguing that a modern stadium could promote sports development, attract national and international events, create employment opportunities, and boost tourism and the local economy.

The Bayelsa State Government is yet to issue a detailed response to the PDP’s latest criticism.

The proposed stadium project has continued to generate mixed reactions among stakeholders, with many calling for transparency, public consultation, and careful prioritisation of government spending.
