In today’s digital age, fame no longer begins with a record deal, blockbuster film or television appearance. More often, it starts with a smartphone and a moment of authenticity that resonates with millions.
For Nigerian content creator Mirabel Ehi Akugbe, popularly known as Pepperbody, that defining moment came unexpectedly through a simple TikTok video.
Born in Ikotun, Lagos, before relocating to Ogun State at a young age, Mirabel’s early years were far removed from social media stardom. Instead, she devoted much of her childhood to gymnastics while nurturing dreams of becoming an actress.
“I’ve always wanted to become an actor,” she recalled during a recent livestream. “Gymnastics was just the path I took at the time. It helped me pay for travel when I was going for auditions and training.”
The discipline she gained from gymnastics helped shape her resilience, but as she grew older, she decided to step away from competitive sports to pursue acting full-time.
Content creation initially served as a hobby rather than a career plan. However, everything changed after she posted a candid TikTok video responding to online criticism about her complexion.
Instead of reacting emotionally after being called “ugly” by a group of girls, Mirabel simply stared calmly into the camera. That unscripted expression struck a chord with viewers and quickly became one of TikTok’s most recognisable reaction memes.
Users across the platform recreated the clip to express everyday frustrations, from difficult bosses to family pressure and awkward social situations.
“I think people connected because it wasn’t fake,” she explained. “I wasn’t acting for the camera. I was just being me in that moment.”
The video propelled Pepperbody to internet fame, helping her attract more than 100,000 followers across social media.
Today, her content extends beyond viral memes to include lifestyle vlogs, dance videos inspired by Afrobeats and Amapiano, comedy skits and interactive livestreams. She has also expanded to YouTube, where she shares more personal aspects of her daily life with fans.
Despite her rapid rise, Pepperbody says she remains focused on building a lasting career rather than simply chasing viral trends.
“Being on social media is one thing because I joke and meme all day,” she said. “But when I stand here and tell you I’m thankful, I really mean it. You’re a huge part of this.”
Although social media has brought her widespread recognition, acting remains her ultimate ambition. She hopes to establish herself in film and television while continuing to grow her digital presence.
Pepperbody’s journey reflects the changing nature of celebrity in the digital era, where authenticity often carries more influence than elaborate productions. Her story also highlights how a single unscripted moment can open doors to opportunities that once seemed out of reach.
For Mirabel Ehi Akugbe, one honest TikTok video transformed her life—and she believes the journey is only just beginning.
